What I’m Addicted to This Week: Game of Thrones – And 3 Ways to Get More Out of Westeros

Jordan Nottrodt #DCommAddicts, Comm Blog

There is no doubt in my mind that I am fully and thoroughly addicted to Game of Thrones. It’s a show I never tire of, and it’s one I can watch over and over and over again. When I first started the show, I watched episodes 1-5 three times before moving onto episode 6. It was that good!

GOT is a world so deep and vast in history and land, with characters that grow and progress in ways you never thought possible. It’s a realm, quite literally, where friends turn to villains, and villains turn to heroes. Beyond the infinite imagery and character depth, there’s never ending action, intricate storytelling, and an unsettling feeling that no one is safe.

One of my favourite things to do is predict the fate of a character, family, or house. This preoccupation has prevented me from reading George R.R. Martin’s books past where the show is, just so I can speculate on what might happen next!

Game of Thrones is my go-to conversation piece. I start with the character question –

Who are your top-five characters from Game of Thrones, in no order, just your favourite five?

I say five because I have to be fair. Picking one favourite in the glittering sea of greatness that is Game of Thrones characters would be near impossible. So think long and hard, who are your five?

My first four come easy: Arya Stark, Daenerys Targaryen, Jon Snow, Margaery Tyrell.

The next one presents more difficulty and varies for me all the time. For the sake of giving an answer, and you have to give a full list of five, I will say Catelyn Stark… or Varys, no wait, Catelyn Stark.

Arya Stark, Daenerys Targaryen, Jon Snow, Margaery Tyrell, Catelyn Stark.

If you’re as passionate as I am about Game of Thrones, here are 3 more ways to explore the realm:

  1. Beautiful Death

This site is a go-to destination for fan art. Beatutifuldeath.com has a customized pop-art poster from every episode of Game of Thrones. You’ll want every one of the illustrations for your walls, but unfortunately only select prints are given out to participating fans!

  1. Telltale Games

There’s a Game of Thrones game; and its not just any game! Telltale Games is known for its detailed storytelling and a ‘choose your own adventure’ style. You get to be your own Game of Thrones characters, making real decisions as you navigate the realm. You’ll even meet a few character favourites (actor voiced) along the way.

  1. Where have all the wildlings gone?

Ever get confused about the Games of Thrones landscape, houses or families? This is must see guide to all things Game of Thrones, created by graphic designer, Nigel Evan Dennis. It includes interactive maps, house labels, and timelines. Just watch out for spoilers, because dead characters are labeled too! (show spoilers only).

Where have all the wildlings gone

Now, I know fantasy isn’t for everyone and that’s okay; we just won’t talk about Game of Thrones or hang out for 10 weeks every spring.

Season 5 of Game of Thrones is on its way, and will be here sooner than you think. As of March 3rd, the premiere airs in just 40 days! You can keep track of the countdown here: http://days.to/until/game-of-thrones-season-5. That’s the exact amount of time you need to re-watch one episode a day up until the new season starts.

Thank you, thank you, thank you HBO for investing the money, time and care into realizing the world that is Westeros. I have not been this addicted to something since I first purchased my extended edition of LOTR.
