Hands… Where to put them.
Many people get self-conscious about what to do with their hands while speaking. Do you fold them in front of you, put them on your hips, or stick them in your pockets?
The best thing to do with your hands is to use them.
Use your hands as you would in day-to-day conversation. Make appropriate gestures during your presentation and feel comfortable. It’s your presentation, so be you. Your gestures will enhance your presentation as long as they are not distracting for you or your audience.
If you’re worried about distracting gestures, one of the best things you can do with your hands is hold them just above your waist. Your fingers can touch or you can have one hand over the other. Your transition from this stance to gesture looks at ease and comfortable. It is the perfect placeholder for your hands when you aren’t using them. Plan ahead! Will you be holding a slide-clicker? This will change your gestures and what you will do with your hands.
