What I’m Addicted To This Week: Periscope

“Hey! I’m Periscoping Passover!”

I first heard about this new app around a noisy dinner table, from a younger cousin holding up his iPhone; as if others around the world would want to “virtually” participate in a complete stranger’s family holiday – as it turns out, 2 people did!!

What the heck is Periscope?

It’s not for submarines or another app for teenagers, rather Periscope allows users to share live video from their smartphone, and “explore the world through someone else’s eyes.” This unique idea was hatched just over a year ago in San Francisco, CA, and gives users an opportunity to engage with followers in a new way, building their brand and telling their story. With over 184K followers to date, Periscope has experienced tremendous success with this new platform, and was recently acquired by social media giant, Twitter, collaborating to innovate online global communication.

Periscope

What can you use it for?

Similar to Twitter’s ability to instantly share 140 character messages and photos, Periscope allows you to share your experiences via live streaming video as well as see what others see, connecting people and places around the world like never before. This is a revolutionary way to interact with followers on social media and strengthen relationships; and the uses for this new app are extensive. From viewing speeches, presentations and seminars to hosting live product demonstrations, workshops and events, there are many uses for this handy tool in the corporate setting; as a bonus feature, the videos can be saved and replayed!

Element is using Periscope for education and updates with our partners at Arrojo in New York City. We think it is a great tool and are working on further plans for it. It is essentially your own personal broadcast studio.”

The DurrellComm team is excited to use Periscope at their next event and share the fun and fantastic experiences here in Uptown Waterloo!
